About

Kimberly Harkey, MEd, LPC-S

My biggest delight comes in helping people push through (and maybe even embrace!)  the messiness of being human to living a life you find fulfilling – even if, and especially when, that means living life to the beat of a different drum. In my work, the people who seem to experience this most intensely and find healing with this kind of therapy are:

  • people who feel anxious when trying to fit in
  • people who identify as rebels and troublemakers
  • people who feel outcast, misunderstood, or marginalized
  • people who feel stagnant or stuck with the status quo
  • people who identify as LGBTQIA+

For many people, this shows up as anxiety, substance use, existential angst, self doubt, and so on. My goal is to offer you another alternative, to work with you to find the beat and the drum that you can fully embrace.

Of course, people from all walks of life can feel this way, and I look forward to meeting you, too! I believe that society’s expectations rarely foster embracing life fully, especially for those who struggle to fit into society’s “boxes” – or just prefer to live outside of them!

My primary approach to therapy is through connection, presence, and acceptance. There is no judgment here. I want you to feel empowered to be exactly who you are, and to help you discover who you are if you haven’t quite figured it out yet. It’s sometimes easier to find ways to fit in, to avoid, to stay busy, or to distract ourselves. I invite you to slow down, to be present, to imagine stepping outside of the box you feel society has tried to squash you into, and to live your life based on your values. This invitation may feel scary. It can be vulnerable to let someone else into your mess, especially if this is the first time. My reassurance is that it can also be profoundly healing.

Professional jargon: I graduated from the University of North Texas with a BA in International Studies, Minor in Italian in 2011. I received my Master’s in Counseling from the University of North Texas in 2014 and am licensed by the state of Texas as a Licensed Professional Counselor. I am also a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers. I have a special clinical interest in individuals experiencing psychosis.

Fun facts: When not at work, you can find me swimming in whatever pool or river I can find. When the sun isn’t out, I love finding new coffee shops to try. I also love reading memoirs, watching reality TV, and painting. I often spend my weekends hiding kindness rocks with my kids or eating Korean BBQ with my wife.
